Chapada dos Veadeiros is vast — and without a guide it can feel impossible to squeeze into just four days. After years leading groups of every age and style, I picked six sights that work as the perfect first-time mix: landscape variety, different effort levels and no wasted kilometres.
Each day balances effort and payoff. You should neither burn out early nor finish wishing you had done more. That is the sweet spot for a memorable first visit.
- Day 1 — Couros waterfalls: long hike, high difficulty, maximum reward
- Day 2 — Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park: Saltos do Rio Preto and Cariocas falls, high difficulty
- Day 3 — Santa Bárbara + Capivara: moderate difficulty, two different worlds in one day
- Day 4 — Moon Valley + Segredo: moderate difficulty, the grand finale
Day 1 — Couros waterfalls
Location
Alto Paraíso de Goiás, about 15 km from town — private property
Difficulty
High. Up to ~12 km round trip, steep descents, rocks and river crossings.
Duration
Full day — early start, return near sunset
We open with Couros for one simple reason: it is the most physically demanding sight, and your legs are still fresh. Leaving it for the end would sell you short — you deserve to arrive there with energy.
The trail drops through cerrado slopes past giant bromeliads, ipês and pequi trees until it reveals one of Chapada’s most dramatic scenes: a staircase of falls running over quartzite slabs, forming corridors, pools and small natural basins in the rock. The water is cold, clear and tinted that soft green only the cerrado seems to brew.
The signature moment is a wide flat ledge where water slides in a thin sheet before plunging into the canyon — the view is breathtaking and the roar filling the gorge makes it a full sensory experience. There are also naturally carved reflection pools where the sky mirrors in still water.
Most of the difficulty is the climb back: long, steep and hot under the cerrado sun — but every step is worth what you saw below. For many visitors this is the trip’s most memorable day.
Couros is one of the farthest sights from Alto Paraíso town and the most demanding on the body. Doing it on day one means you enjoy it at full strength — without the fatigue stacked from previous days.
Day 2 — Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park
Location
São Jorge, Alto Paraíso municipality — federal conservation unit
Difficulty
High. Trails up to ~14 km with sun exposure, uneven ground and rock descents.
Duration
Full day — you must enter before 1 p.m.
The park is a UNESCO natural World Heritage Site — and once you are inside you see why. More than 240,000 hectares of largely intact cerrado, trails through deep valleys, canyon-edge lookouts and some of the tallest waterfalls on the route.
Main trails lead to Saltos do Rio Preto and the Cariocas waterfalls. The Saltos are two consecutive drops over 80 m high, carved into a dark quartzite gap cutting diagonally across the landscape — a geological show with few equals. The spray cools the air even on the hottest day. The Cariocas are a chain of runs and swimmable pots in orange and grey rock, with water gliding across slabs polished like marble.
Much of the trail is exposed sun with little shade on the slab sections. Entry strictly ends at 1 p.m. — arrive later and you will be turned away even with a guide. Leave your inn early, eat well and pack completely; the reward matches the effort.
- Enter before 1 p.m. — no exceptions, even with a guide
- Guide required for groups entering after 1 p.m. and for night hikes
- Free entry on weekends and public holidays for Brazilian visitors (check current rules)
- No feeding wildlife, no camping outside designated areas, stay on marked trails
- Little or no mobile signal — save your route offline or print it
Day 3 — Santa Bárbara + Capivara
Location
São Jorge area — private sites, dirt-road access
Difficulty
Moderate. Short to medium trails, forgiving terrain — a breather after two hard days.
Duration
Morning + afternoon — both fit comfortably in one day
Day three is deliberately easier: your body recovers after two intense hikes. Santa Bárbara and Capivara use shorter approaches and faster rewards — without feeling any less epic.
Santa Bárbara is among Chapada’s most beautiful falls and still feels well guarded. A dirt road leads to the gate, then the trail drops through forest to a twin drop over wide pink-tinged quartzite slabs. The pool at the base is roomy, deep enough for a proper swim and cold enough to refresh legs still talking from Couros and the park. Deep green forest against the rock looks almost painted.
After Santa Bárbara we head to Cachoeira da Capivara — a completely different mood. Here the river runs wider and slower over stepping-stone rocks that form tiered natural pools. The cerrado opens overhead with generous light — the kind of place to lie on warm stone, close your eyes and listen to water. Ideal late afternoon.
Santa Bárbara brings height and drama; Capivara brings ease and contemplation. Together they give the perfect rhythm — energy in the morning, unwinding in the afternoon — right at the midpoint of a four-day trip.
Day 4 — Moon Valley + Segredo
Location
São Jorge — nearby sites that combine easily
Difficulty
Moderate. Short trails, rocky footing, some wet steps — suitable for most travellers.
Duration
Full morning — start early to enjoy Moon Valley before crowds build
The last day saves two of the most photographed first-timer icons: Moon Valley (Vale da Lua) and Cachoeira do Segredo.
Moon Valley is genuinely otherworldly. Over centuries the São Miguel River sculpted quartzite into rounded, hollowed, perforated shapes polished smooth. Stone shifts from white to gold; wet surfaces flash purple-black veins. Water threads between bowls of different depths — some sun-warmed, others shaded and cool. Walking barefoot, feeling rock that old underfoot, is hard to describe.
Next comes Cachoeira do Segredo. The name fits: it sits slightly off the busiest São Jorge circuit and is easy to miss if you do not know where to look. The fall steps down an amphitheatre of stone into an emerald pool framed by mossy walls. Sound rebounds off the rock — an atmosphere that feels removed from everyday life.
Saving Moon Valley and Segredo for the end is intentional. They deliver what postcards cannot — the sense that Chapada still hides secrets — and that you just found them.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the “right” order for the sights?
This sequence balances effort across four days: Couros (hard) on day 1, National Park (hard) on day 2, Santa Bárbara + Capivara (moderate) on day 3, Moon Valley + Segredo (moderate) on day 4. Sticking to it helps you enjoy everything without early burnout.
How much are entrance fees?
Private sites (Couros, Santa Bárbara, Capivara, Moon Valley, Segredo) typically charge roughly R$40–R$80 per person. The National Park is free on weekends and holidays for Brazilian visitors; weekdays may charge. Owners set prices — confirm before you go.
Can I do this loop without a car?
Yes, but plan ahead. Several sights lie down long dirt roads without public transport. The practical option is hiring a guide with transfers included.
Does this work year-round?
Yes. Chapada is a year-round destination. Wet season (roughly November–March) means fuller falls and greener forest but occasional trail closures. Dry season (about April–October) usually offers the most stable access. Each season has its own magic.
Do I need a guide everywhere?
Inside the National Park, guides are mandatory for entry after 1 p.m. and for night hikes. Elsewhere they are optional but strongly recommended for safety, timing and hidden viewpoints.
